Driving in Moldova

Moldova is a country that occupies 32.000 km2, so as big a Catalonia, and a population of 3,6 M inhabitants (though some people have told us that in real is much lower, many people are trying to find better living conditions in some other places).

But one part of Moldova (Transnistria, 4.100 km2 and 550.000 inhabitants) prefers to keep being a part of Russia, and in 1990 they declared themselves independent, with own army. We tried to reach Tiraspol (its capital), but they wanted us to do the same papers as we did when crossing the border in Russia (among them, importing the car). We rejected because we were just curious about the border, so we turned around. The Moldovan policemen looked very funny when they saw us coming back in 10 minutes…

Just a small remark. In Spanish we call this country ‘Moldavia’, which is a also region of Romania. Why don’t we call this country also Moldova? That would make communication easier…

Well, entering the border in Moldova we had to pay for a ‘vignette’. So I thought: well done! And the road to Chisinau (its capital, 700.000 inhabitants) was not that bad as some we had driven in Ukraine. But after that… we were following some Google yellow road (so, main road) and it was without asphalt! Here one picture of the google route and of the road itself 🙂

Google in Ukraine and Moldova is not so reliable in general…

All the small villages were full of children. Many bikes, many horse carriages, many cattle in the fields…

Here some pictures!

Long line of trucks waiting at the border to get out from Moldova.
